Our physiotherapists now offer online consultations so we can continue to support you even when you’re overseas or unable to leave or attend your appointment for any reason.
We know how important it is to be consistent with your recovery and care, and we’re excited about the accessibility and flexibility online consultations offer, while not compromising on receiving expert guidance from our highly experienced physio team.
How Does A Virtual Physio Appointment Work?
A virtual physiotherapy appointment works similarly to an in-person consultation, except it takes place over a secure video call. If you’re an existing client of ours, we’ll discuss your progress, review any therapies and rehab exercises you’re currently doing, and perform any necessary testing to see where you’re at now.
Many people are surprised at how practical it can be to have your consultation virtually. For example, if we need to check the progress of your glute and hip strength as you have had a prior imbalance, we can have you complete single-leg squats (or gentler sit-to-stand alternatives) and compare how your left and right sides are performing. We’ll observe your stability and balance throughout the exercise, as well as how many reps you can comfortably complete per side. Then, we’ll make updates to your rehab plan accordingly. Naturally, we are unable to perform manual therapies remotely.
New clients
For new clients, at the start of your session we’ll discuss your medical history, current symptoms, and specific concerns and problems. You’ll also be asked to describe your pain levels, movement limitations, and how the issue affects your daily life in order to set goals that are meaningful to you!
You’ll be guided through a series of movements and functional tests so your physiotherapist can better understand your posture, range of motion, and muscle function. From this, we’ll discuss management options that match your circumstances - specifically whether you’re able to attend in-person sessions in the future for hands-on therapies, or you specifically want a plan that can be managed entirely remotely, with or without the purchase of tools like a resistance band, foam roller and the like. We understand everyone has different preferences and circumstances, and we always align with what’s important for you while utilising evidence-based therapies and best-practice treatment guidelines.
You’ll also receive clear instructions and demonstrations, and be fully informed about pain management techniques and lifestyle modifications you can make, to ensure that you can follow your plan confidently from home.
What Are the Benefits of Online Physiotherapy Consultations?
Online physiotherapy consultations provide a range of advantages for those who need professional physiotherapy support but may not be able to attend an in-person session.
1. Accessibility and convenience
We understand that attending an in-person physiotherapy session can sometimes be challenging due to time constraints, travel requirements, or physical limitations. Online physiotherapy with us gives you trusted, professional care no matter where you are. It also overcomes accessibility barriers for those in remote areas, those with mobility restrictions, and those in chronic pain who may struggle with commuting.
2. Tailored advice
Online physiotherapy is very different from watching a video and learning general information. It’s fully personalised to you, just like the information provided during an in-person appointment. You receive clear instructions and demonstrations during the video consult, and your technique is checked as best as possible.
3. Ongoing support and accountability
One of the biggest challenges in physiotherapy is staying consistent with prescribed exercises and rehabilitation routines. Online consultations provide a structured way to maintain progress with regular follow-ups and clear communication. Your physiotherapist can track your recovery, adjust your exercise plan, and give encouragement to keep you motivated. Knowing that you have a scheduled check-in can serve as a powerful reminder to stay committed to your treatment while providing a space of easy communication if any new issues arise.
4. Suitable for a wide range of conditions
There are a variety of conditions that online physiotherapy can be effective for. If you suffer from back or neck pain due to poor posture, prolonged sitting, or an old injury, virtual sessions can help guide you through specific exercises to strengthen your muscles and improve alignment. For sports injuries, online physiotherapy can provide rehabilitation exercises focusing on restoring mobility and preventing re-injury. Those recovering from surgery can also benefit from home-based movement programs that support healing without the need for frequent clinic visits. If you require more hands-on care or a greater level of assessment due to a particular problem or injury, we’ll let you know during your appointment.
How to Prepare for Your Online Physiotherapy Consultation
To get the most out of your virtual physiotherapy appointment, a little preparation goes a long way. Before your appointment:
- Find a quiet space, choosing a location with minimal distractions and adequate lighting so your physiotherapist can clearly see your movements.
- Set up your laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a stable internet connection - this is essential. Check that your camera and microphone are functioning properly.
- Wear comfortable clothing, opting for loose-fitting attire that allows easy movement, similar to what you’d wear for an in-person session.
- Have any equipment ready that you already have at home, like a yoga mat, resistance bands, or small weights. These items are not necessary, but they can help, depending on your concern.
- Write down any questions, concerns, symptoms, or goals you want to discuss during your consultation. This isn’t limited to online sessions, it’s also a good idea for in-person appointments, as questions are easily forgotten during the consultation.
What your physio wants from you at your online appointment:
- Be honest and descriptive - provide as much detail as possible about your symptoms, discomfort, or limitations. If you already have them written down, this is perfect.
- Follow our demonstrations when we ask you to perform certain movements to assess mobility and function. It’s okay if your movements are not quite right! Watching you perform movements gives us valuable insights into how your body is working and where any issues are.
- If anything is unclear, don't hesitate to ask for clarification, whether it’s an exercise or a recommendation.
- Please take notes. It’s easy to forget new information, even at in-person appointments. Jot down key advice, exercises, and follow-up instructions, even if we email you instructions or more information after your appointment.
- Stay committed and perform any prescribed exercises per your schedule, keeping track of your progress.
Online Physiotherapy for Women’s Health: Supporting Mothers Through Every Stage
One area where online physiotherapy has proven especially beneficial is women’s health, particularly for mothers in the postpartum period. Attending in-person appointments can be challenging during this time, making virtual consultations an ideal solution for expert support from home.
Supporting Postpartum Recovery
The postpartum period is a time of immense physical change, and many new mothers experience concerns such as pelvic floor dysfunction, abdominal separation (diastasis recti), back, hip, or pelvic pain, and C-section scar healing. Addressing these issues early can help prevent long-term complications and improve overall recovery.
With online physiotherapy, mothers can receive targeted rehabilitation exercises and expert advice without leaving home with a newborn. Our physiotherapists provide personalised guidance, helping women rebuild strength safely while improving mobility and function in a way that fits their lifestyle.
Convenience for mothers with young children
As children grow, mothers often find it increasingly difficult to schedule appointments due to work, childcare responsibilities, and daily household tasks. Online consultations remove the barriers of travel time and logistics, allowing mothers to access care without rearranging their entire day.
Guidance on safe movement and strengthening
Even if you cannot come in for an in-person comprehensive assessment, our women’s health physios can still provide support on returning to exercise Whether you’re dealing with bladder control issues, prolapse symptoms, or postural imbalances from breastfeeding and carrying a baby, we teach supportive techniques to prevent further strain and provide structured plans that gradually reintroduce movement in a safe, controlled manner.
Education on self-care & long-term well-being
Beyond rehab, our online physio consults empower women with knowledge about their own bodies. Mothers learn self-care techniques, pain management strategies, and ways to support long-term musculoskeletal health. Understanding how hormonal changes impact muscle function, joint stability, and recovery can be invaluable for women at any stage of their postpartum journey.
