Jane Rooney - The Knee Masterclass - 1 Day 2027

Dr Jane Rooney, FACP is a Specialist Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, sub-specialty knee (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2009) and Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (1997). Jane is an Associate Clinical Professor at Swinburne University, an Honorary Lecturer at Melbourne University, Guest Lecturer and post graduate mentor at La Trobe University, an examiner and facilitator for the Australian College of Physiotherapists and a regular presenter for many APA courses over the past 20 years. She is also currently involved in several knee research projects. Jane was awarded the prestigious Australian Churchill Scholarship in 2016 to evaluate ACL injury management in Europe and USA.

Jane has a passion for education and is the sole director of Physio Educators which provides courses and online masterclasses in conjunction with the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Jane has lectured extensively throughout Australia and Internationally over the past 25 years. Jane attained her APA certificate in Acupuncture in 2000 and has been involved in teaching the level 1 and level 2 APA Dry Needling course since 2004. Jane previously has taught Dry Needling at Master’s and Clinical Doctorate level at Melbourne University. Jane has also been on the Victorian dry needling committee for many years and is also on the national dry needling education committee. Jane is the Clinical Director of Prahran Sports Medicine Centre, a large multidisciplinary sports medicine clinic in Melbourne, Australia. She has extensive experience in the provision of sports physiotherapy services over the past 27 years for sports teams and individual athletes at state, national and international levels.

This masterclass is designed to develop your ability to:

• Generate and prioritise differential diagnoses
• Select examination procedures according to the clinical question
• Interpret findings in context rather than in isolation
• Re-rank hypotheses as new information emerges
• Assess both traumatic and non-traumatic knee presentations
• Integrate history, examination, function and imaging
• Identify when further investigation or referral is warranted
• Translate examination findings into individualised management
• Incorporate patient goals and prognosis into clinical decisions
• Explain and manage clinical uncertainty
• Develop rehabilitation and return-to-activity strategies

The day runs as three case-based clinical reasoning sessions, two with live patients and one recorded. Each case follows the same arc: case introduction, initial participant reasoning, subjective assessment, a clinical reasoning pause, physical examination, assessment and examination review, differential diagnosis and investigation discussion, then management, rehabilitation and prognosis, closing with questions and key takeaways. Assessment review is integrated into each case rather than delivered as a separate generic examination lecture.

Case 1: Acute Traumatic Sporting Knee (live patient)

A recent sporting knee injury, ideally involving a meaningful ligament or intra-articular differential. Reasoning covers:

• Mechanism and injury history
• Acute and subacute presentation
• ACL and other ligament injury
• Associated meniscal, chondral or other intra-articular pathology
• Selecting and interpreting clinical tests, and which examination findings actually change management
• Imaging and referral decisions
• Early management, including operative versus non-operative considerations
• Rehabilitation planning, prognosis and return-to-sport considerations

Case 2: Persistent Knee Pain (recorded case)

The recorded format is used to demonstrate how clinical reasoning evolves. The working diagnosis changes as more information becomes available, rather than a known diagnosis being presented. Reasoning covers:

• Persistent or chronic knee symptoms
• Osteoarthritis and degenerative structural findings where relevant
• Degenerative meniscal or chondral findings
• Distinguishing symptoms from incidental imaging findings
• Functional limitations and patient goals
• Exercise and load management
• When imaging changes management, and when medical or orthopaedic referral is appropriate
• Education, shared decision-making and prognosis

Case 3: Anterior Knee Presentation (live patient)

An active patient presenting with anterior knee symptoms. As with the other cases, the emphasis is differential diagnosis and clinical decision-making. Reasoning covers:

• Patellofemoral pain, patellar instability where relevant, patellar tendinopathy and other competing diagnoses
• Local versus referred sources of symptoms
• Functional assessment, load and capacity, and strength assessment
• Kinetic-chain considerations
• Symptom modification where appropriate
• Exercise selection and rehabilitation progression
• Return to activity or sport

Please note: The cases and clinical presentations outlined above are indicative. As this masterclass includes live patient assessment, the specific conditions, diagnoses and presentations covered will depend on the availability and suitability of patients at the time of the course. Where necessary, cases may be substituted or the programme adjusted to ensure the greatest educational value while maintaining the overall learning objectives of the masterclass.
